Early Childhood Language Interventions for Children with Developmental Disabilities
and Delays

In January 2008, OSEP funded the third cohort of Model Demonstration Projects. Cohort 3 consisted of three projects focusing on early language interventions for children from birth to age 5 with developmental disabilities and delays. Features of these models included the following:

Serving children from birth to age 5 served by Part C and Part B early intervention programs

Providing effective functional language intervention strategies in natural settings

Emphasis on collecting and using data for decision-making

Focus on improved language and communication skills

Promoting continuity for children from Part C to Part B preschool services

Systematic strategies for professional development and capacity building that result in increased practitioner/provider abilities and behaviors that promote language development

Systematic strategies for capacity building that result in increased parent/caregiver abilities and behaviors that promote language development.
